Can CBD be used to treat chronic pain?

CBD product research for pain management has been promising.
 
CBD may provide an alternative for people suffering from chronic pain who are currently reliant on medications such as opioids, which can be habit-forming and cause additional side effects. However, more research is needed to confirm the pain-relieving benefits of CBD oil and other products.
 
Everyone has an endocannabinoid system, which is a cell signalling system (ECS).
 
CBD may interact with endocannabinoid receptors in your brain and immune system, according to some researchers.
 
Receptors are small proteins that are attached to your cells. They receive signals, mostly chemical ones, from various stimuli and assist your cells in responding.
 
This reaction produces anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects, which aid in pain management. This means that CBD oil and other products may help people who are suffering from chronic pain, such as chronic back pain.

One 2018 study looked at how effective CBD was on relieving chronic pain. The review focused on studies conducted between 1975 and 2018. These studies looked at various types of pain, such as:

  • Neuropathic pain
  • Fibromyalgia

Researchers concluded from these studies that CBD was effective in overall pain management and did not cause negative side effects.

Can CBD be used to treat arthritis pain?

A 2016 study looked at CBD use in arthritis-prone rats.
 
The CBD gel was applied to rats four days in a row by the researchers. The rats were given either 0.6, 3.1, 6.2, or 62.3 milligrammes (mg) of CBD per day. The researchers observed decreased inflammation and overall pain in the affected joints of the rats. There were no noticeable side effects.
 
Low doses of 0.6 or 3.1 mg had no effect on pain scores in rats. The researchers discovered that 6.2 mg/day was a sufficient dose to alleviate the rats’ pain and swelling.
 
Furthermore, rats given 62.3 mg/day had similar outcomes as rats given 6.2 mg/day. They did not experience less pain after receiving a significantly higher dosage.
 
CBD gel’s anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties may be beneficial to people suffering from arthritis. However, more human studies are required.

Can CBD be used to treat cancer pain?

CBD is also used by some cancer patients. CBD has been shown in animal studies to reduce the size of cancerous tumours. However, most human studies have focused on the role of CBD in pain management related to cancer and cancer treatment.
 
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has identified CBD as a potential treatment for chemotherapy side effects such as:
 
  • Pain
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite

In a 2010 study on cancer-related pain, participants were given oral sprays of a THC-CBD extract combination. The THC-CBD extract was combined with opioids. According to the findings of this study, using the extract provided more effective pain relief than using opioids alone.

Can CBD be used to treat migraines?

There have been few studies on CBD and migraine. The studies that are currently available look at CBD in conjunction with THC, not alone.
 
However, according to the findings of a 2017 study, CBD and THC can help migraine sufferers experience less acute and intense pain.
 
Some participants in this two-phase study took a combination of two compounds. One compound contained nearly no THC and 9 percent CBD. The other compound had a THC content of 19%. Doses were administered orally.
 
When the doses were less than 100 mg, there was no effect on pain in phase I. When the doses were increased to 200 mg, acute pain was reduced by 55%.
 
In phase II, participants who received a combination of CBD and THC compounds saw a 40.4 percent reduction in the frequency of their migraine attacks. The daily intake was 200 mg.
 
The combination of compounds outperformed 25 mg of amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant. Amitriptyline reduced migraine attacks in study participants by 40.1 percent.
 
Participants with cluster headaches found relief from the combination of CBD and THC compounds, but only if they had a migraine history as a child.
